This project involves restoring the back of the building. It started with accessing and replacing the failing foundation, the upper and lower brick walls, the window, and other elements. We are so fortunate for the support of volunteers, highly skilled local craftsmen, and town and grant funding that have made this happen. Stay tuned, we are almost done this one.
The back walls of the Historical Society's addition were showing their age. There were signs inside and outside that it now needed immediate repair.
Work began by removing the bricks. Bricks were inspected and cleaned. Bricks in good condition were set aside to be re-used.
Once the bricks were removed from the lower and upper walls, foundation work was the next step.
In this step, the failing, shallow foundation was removed. A new, deeper foundation was installed, while the building perched above it.
Sturdy Jenga-like supports held the building in place while foundation work was done below. The building was closed during this work.
Nearly complete. Remaining work includes painting the brick, fixing the upper window and fixing access to the side door.
