Yes! We want the building to continue to serve as a place for community to gather. We are working on installing fans to make it nicer in the summer. Note that our insurance coverage does not allow for alcohol at events. We have a form on our Documents page to download/complete, with lots of details. Call us if you have any questions.
Start with emailing or calling us! We tend to meet monthly at the Historical Society building just off Route 108 in Bakersfield, except in the winter, when the building is winterized and unheated. Let us know if you'd like to help a little or often; with events, donating food and/or raffle prizes, organizing events, painting sills, making coffee, folding newsletters...we would love to have you get involved.
Easy! Join Bakersfield Historical Society as a member and we will mail it to the address you provide. if you click the Documents link to the left, you can download, print and complete the membership form which includes details on where to send your dues and form.
We have been updating folks about the building restoration here, in our newsletter. and on our Facebook page. It's an ongoing project.
No, but we have members who are part of it, as members of the Town of Bakersfield Conservation Commission. In addition to their goal of repairing and restoring the Carriage Barn in the park, they maintain two trails, and a pollinator garden. They have a page on the Town site. In recent years, they completed a culvert inventory. They meet once a month, by Zoom and in person, on an all-volunteer basis.
The Bakersfield Historical Society is a non-profit 501(C)3 corporation. We are all volunteers. Your donation goes into our general fund, which is most often used to pay for fuel and electricity for the building. It also is used toward small improvements and repairs. And in 2023, a vacuum cleaner for cleaning up after events. Large-scale repairs are funded by grants and loans. You can earmark your donation for a specific project, otherwise it goes in the general fund.
We are not. We own the Historical Society property only, which houses our collections, and we are charged with maintaining it and them. We do so through donations, fundraising events, volunteer efforts, generous tradespeople, supportive taxpayers and state grants and loans. We all seem to have a bottomless enthusiasm for sharing, preserving and celebrating the history of Bakersfield.
